After nine years of managing the Toronto Flash User Group, it is time for me to step down. Its been a great run, and I’ve met so many passionate and interesting people through the User Group. I leave Rick Mason, the co-manager, in place and have invited long time member and friend Simon Conlin as the new co-manager to run things with Rick. Feel free to reach out to Simon at simon@flashinto.com. Both Rick and Simon have been involved and working with FlashinTO for many years, and I have the ultimate faith in their abilities to continue the legacy.
I will still be around and involved, but unfortunately due to growing work demands i have decided to pass things on to Simon.
sincerely,
–
Shawn Pucknell
I’ve finally got the (un-edited) videos of Matt’s Oct presentation up on Youtube. Matt talks about the story of Trainyard and it’s rise to success on the App Store. The video is hand-held and for that I apologize, still lots of good nuggets of info in here for you.
Visit the FlashinTO channel on Youtube to see:

p.s. I know there’s nothing else up on here yet but I do intend to try and get some presentations online for people to see.
Just wanted to bring some news about the BlackBerry PlayBook to your attention in case you’ve missed it.
As you may know, RIM chose Adobe AIR as the primary app development platform for the PlayBook. In fact, if you’ve seen the videos from last month’s Adobe MAX conference, where RIM showed off the PlayBook, then you’ve see AIR apps in action on the device. And if you haven’t seen the videos, you can check them out on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyJVNK7aSW4
To encourage Flash Platform developers to build apps for the PlayBook, RIM is actually giving away free PlayBooks! This is a great move, since as you know if you’ve done any application development for
mobile devices, a major stumbling block is the actual lack of devices to test on. All you need to do to take advantage of this offer is build an app for the PlayBook and if the app is accepted into BlackBerry’s AppWorld prior to the launch of the PlayBook, you’ll get a free PlayBook:
http://devblog.blackberry.com/2010/10/blackberry-playbook-developer-promotion-information/
So, here’s what you need to do:
1. Go to the BlackBerry developer site and download and install the SDK and the simulator, so you can build and test your app. Here’s the URL:
http://us.blackberry.com/developers/tablet/
2. Develop your AIR app in Adobe Flash Builder or Adobe Flash Professional and test it in the PlayBook simulator. (Note that the SDK doesn’t integrate with Flash Pro at this time, so your better off working in Flash Builder. But, if Flash Pro is your tool of choice, there are ways to make it work.)
3. Once your app is ready to go, submit it to AppWorld, and if it’s accepted, you’ll get a free PlayBook!
Justin Kozuch has been busy working on putting together the Pixel to Product project. The intent is to carry out a complete survey of Canada’s digital media industry so that we have the knowledge needed to organize as a group, lobby government for support of our industry and to help ourselves grow into the future.
The first survey is ready and now available online. This is a call to all digital agency owners, web startups, and freelancers to take part in this survey. For a full description of the first survey and a link to take part head to http://49pixels.ca/2010/11/17/canadas-digital-media-census/
I’ve just finished up a final bunch of details and am now ready to reveal the brand new Job Board. You can post and apply to jobs, as well as post and browse resumes. All for free!
Visit jobs.fitc.ca to get started.
This is a joint project with FITC and pretty soon we’ll be offering premium listings. For a small fee these listings will be featured at the top of the list and will also be featured on the FITC website. We currently have these premium listings there now, but this new board will provide a better way to browse them as well as cross post them to FlashinTO.
That said, our local community is encouraged to use the free listings for all manner of jobs big and small, for designers, developers or anyone else in interactive.
Let me know if you run in to any problems. There are still some quirks I want to iron out but I’ve tested most of the functionality and I think it’s good to at least get started with.
Finally, sorry for the delay in getting this up. He last system I was using was falling apart and it took some time to find something new and something that would work for FITC’s requirements as well.
Good job hunting!
Some of you may remember last June that myself and FITC in conjunction with NXNE, worked to organize the very first NXNE Interactive event. It was a huge success and planning is under way for 2011.
We’re actively looking for panel and presentation proposals right now so if you want to be part of what will surely be an amazing line-up of speakers and topics go submit your ideas right now. We’re looking for all kinds of content from social media to web development, marketing, design, theory and whatever else you can dream up.
Get your proposals in before the newly extended deadline, Nov 22nd.
